Treatment Approaches
This is often the first section people search for — and I understand why. When you're in pain, you want relief. What I've learned after years of navigating this, though, is that the most effective approach almost always involves understanding your options before committing to one. The neuropathy treatment landscape is genuinely complex, and what works well for one person can be unhelpful or even problematic for another.
I'm not a doctor, and nothing here should replace a conversation with your healthcare provider. What I can offer is an informed patient's perspective on what the research actually says, what real people report, and how to think about making decisions in a space where there's often no single right answer.
Neuropathy treatments broadly fall into a few categories:
- Medications — often the first tool doctors reach for. Anticonvulsants like gabapentin and pregabalin, antidepressants like duloxetine and amitriptyline, and topical options like lidocaine patches and capsaicin cream. These can be genuinely helpful, but they all come with trade-offs in terms of side effects.
- Device-based therapies — including TENS units, peripheral nerve stimulation, and infrared and red light therapy. These have growing evidence bases and are worth exploring, especially if you're looking to reduce medication reliance.
- Hands-on therapies — physical therapy, acupuncture, and biofeedback. These have real evidence behind them and offer benefits that medications alone can't provide. Physical therapy in particular is frequently underutilized — it addresses balance and mobility issues alongside pain.

A few things I've learned about navigating neuropathy treatment: most people end up using a combination of approaches rather than finding one silver bullet. What works tends to shift over time, so staying flexible and informed matters. Tracking your symptoms and responses in a simple journal can also make you a dramatically better advocate in medical appointments.
Take your time with this section. The goal isn't to try everything at once — it's to understand what's available so you can have smarter conversations with your care team.
